Fortnite’s “no” to Play Store creates potential for malware.

There’s real concern over the decision not to distribute Android versions of the hit-game Fortnite through Google’s Play Store.

Makers Epic have opted for distributing the software to gamers themselves to reduce costs and build relationships with gamers directly.

However, many are worried that not opting to use Google Play will open the door to scammers, seeing malware and viruses being distributed through fake websites and offers.

At Guardian Saints we’re aware that the game is incredibly popular among young people and those in care are no exception.

So what advice can you give your young people?

  • Make sure that Fortnite and its add-ons are always downloading from the official Epic Games site - https://www.epicgames.com

  • If there’s an offer that’s “too good to be true” for add-ons etc. then it usually is.

In addition, one of our team Doug Johnston has pointed out that “Anyone using Android 7 or earlier will have to edit security settings to ‘allow’ download from other sources. They should return setting back to ‘not allow’ such downloads but probably won’t as they'll be in hurry to play the game.”
